Antisymmetry and Word Order in Serial Constructions

چکیده

Strict head-final surface order derives from underlying left-headedness in Ijo , a Niger-Congo language of Nigeria. A word order anomaly in Ijo SERIAL VERB CONSTRUCTIONS (SVCs) strongly suggests this, and left-to-right asymmetric c-command among internal arguments of SVCs confirms it. The anomaly is universal among surface right-headed languages with SVCs, indicating that deep left-headedness is universal, as antisymmetry theory predicts (Kayne 1994). Assuming complements are in Specs, and that a light verb v selects every VP (Chomsky 1999), I derive VOVO from OVOV by two instances of V-to-v movement. I argue for a nonuniform approach to SVCs, involving relations of both raising (Campbell 1989) and control (Collins 1997). Other aspects of SVC word order are predictable from a universal thematic hierarchy nontheme theme, and short scrambling (Takano 1998).*

Iranian Advanced EFL Learners’ Awareness and the Use of Marked Word Order: Discourse-pragmatically Motivated Variations

The present investigation was designed to study the production and comprehension of specific means for information highlighted by advanced Iranian learners of English as a Foreign Language. The study focused on the discourse-pragmatically motivated variations of the basic word order such as inversion, pre-posing, it- and Wh-clefts. After taking the Nelson test, a homogeneous group was settled. ...

Japanese Multiple Nominative Constructions: The View of Antisymmetry

This paper focuses on multiple nominative constructions (MNCs) in Japanese, pursuing the question of how nominative ga-marked phrases are syntactically licensed. MNCs in Japanese, in which more than one gamarked phrase can occur within a clause, have widely been studied by a number of linguists (e.g. Fukui, 1986; Heycock, 1993; Kuno, 1973; Takezawa, 1987; Tateshi, 1994; Vermeulen, 2005; Whitman...

Notes on the Antisymmetry of Syntax

In what proved to be probably the most influential Principles-andParameters manuscript of the last year, Kayne (1993) has proposed 1) a Linear Correspondence Axiom which together with a particular definition of (asymmetric) c-command is supposed to allow only SVO and OVS as underlying word orders and 2) an abstract beginning node asymmetrically ccommanding all other nodes which is supposed to f...

Thai Classifiers and the Structure of Complex Thai Nominals

This paper aims to posit a functional category for Thai classifiers and demonstrate the analysis of Thai complex nominals adopting the antisymmetry framework (Kayne 1994). It proposes that Thai classifiers have an independently functional status and project the Classifier Phrase (ClassP) basically because they work in the same way as agreement. Evidence supporting their functional status includ...

The Headedness of Mandarin Chinese Serial Verb Constructions: A Corpus-Based Study

Existing treebanks of Mandarin Chinese such as the Sinica Treebank, the Harbin Institute of Technology Treebank, and the Penn Chinese Treebank, parse Chinese serial verb constructions incorrectly or inconsistently in terms of headedness, i.e. which verb to be assigned with the label of syntactic and/or semantic “head”. Aspectual markers in serial verb constructions can help determine the head o...
